How To

Basil growing tips

Basil is one of the most versatile herbs you can use in your kitchen. Basil is great to add flavor to dishes, sauces or pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Be careful about where you place it. Basil is an annually-living plant. It will not survive beyond one season if the location is not right. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. It is best to grow it outdoors in an area with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination typically takes around ten days. Once germinated, move the pots into a shaded area where temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Transplant the seedlings into larger pots by removing the plastic wrap. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. Add more potting mixes as necessary. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. The plants should be misted daily to prevent them from wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect them from cold weather and reduce water loss.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil requires regular watering in order to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. A timer can be used to shut off the irrigation system when it is dry.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. The leaves can be dried on paper towels or screens. Keep the dried leaves in glass containers or bags in a refrigerator.
