In addition, they may not have as good a shelf life as traditional vegetables. Organic gardening relies heavily on natural resources. Organic gardening can require crop rotation, cover crops and green manure. The organic gardener can limit the natural resource impact by using these cover crops and green manure. There are several varieties of sulfur on the market, such as Lime-Sulfur, ThioluxTM, and others.

Biological tillage can be described as tillage done without the use of machines. This involves the use organisms to aerate soil. Large creatures use soil to aerate it. The soil is amended with a third-part compost. To minimize disturbance to the organisms, the gardener must carefully turn the soil. The gardener can then plant the vegetables. This will be easier than using a tractor to till the soil.

To keep the soil clean, gardeners can use a variety of pest control methods that are compatible with the organic philosophy. You can use small plastic or paper cups that have had their bottoms removed to push into the soil around young plants. Aluminum foil, or even six inches of sewer pipe can also be used to achieve the same effect. Nylon bird mesh can also be used to protect young seedlings from birds. So, these methods are very effective for controlling pests and weeds.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. You should spread about one quarter cup of the fertilizer per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
