How To

Basil Growing Tips

Basil is one of the most versatile herbs you can use in your kitchen. Basil can be used to flavor dishes and add flavor to sauces, soups, pasta, and desserts. These are some great tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annual plant and will only live one season if it's not in the right place. Basil is tolerant to partial shade, but it prefers full sun. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should always be planted at least 2 weeks before the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Place the pots in clear plastic wrap. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Germination can take up to ten days. After the pots have germinated, place them in a sunny area where temperatures are around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. As necessary, you can add more potting material. The containers should be placed in a sunny location or under indirect lighting. To prevent wilting, mist the plants every day.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will protect them against cold weather and reduce water losses.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. Use paper towels or screens to dry the leaves. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
