FAQ

When can you plant flowers in your garden?

Planting flowers is best done during springtime when temperatures are milder and the soil is moist. If you live outside of a warm climate, it is best not to plant flowers until the first frost. The ideal temperature for growing plants indoors is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

What vegetables are good to grow together?

It is possible to grow tomatoes and peppers together, as they like the same soil conditions and temperatures. Both are great companions as tomatoes require heat to ripen, while peppers need cooler temperatures to achieve their best flavor. Plant them together indoors at least six weeks before you plant them. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

Do I have to purchase special equipment in order to grow vegetables on my own?

It's not true. All you need are a trowel or shovel and a watering can.

Can I grow fruit trees in pots?

Yes! If space is limited, you can grow fruit trees in pots. You should make sure that your pot has drainage holes to keep excess moisture from rotting the tree. Also, ensure the pot is deep enough to hold the root ball. This will prevent the tree from being stressed.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
