FAQ

Do I need to buy special equipment to grow vegetables?

Non, really. All you need is a shovel, trowel, watering can, and maybe a rake.

When to plant flowers?

Planting flowers is best done during springtime when temperatures are milder and the soil is moist. If you live outside of a warm climate, it is best not to plant flowers until the first frost. The ideal temperature for indoor plants is around 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

What vegetables do you recommend growing together?

Tomatoes and peppers can be grown together because they prefer similar soil conditions. They work well together as tomatoes need heat to ripen and peppers need lower temperatures for optimal flavor. Start seeds indoors approximately six weeks prior to planting. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

What kind of lighting works best for growing plants indoors?

Because they emit less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs, Florescent lights are ideal for indoor plant growth. They are also consistent in lighting, and do not flicker or dimm. Both regular and compact fluorescent fluorescent bulbs are available. CFLs are up to 75% cheaper than traditional bulbs.

When should you plant herbs?

Herbs should be planted during springtime when soil temperatures reach 55degF. The best results are achieved when they are in full sunshine. Basil indoors can be grown in pots with potting mixture. They should be kept out of direct sunlight until they grow leaves. When the plants have started to grow, transfer them into bright indirect sunlight. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

To apply the fertilizer, spread it evenly over the soil using a shovel or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
