How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one the most versatile herbs that you can use in your home. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. Here are some ways to grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted two weeks before the last frost date. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination usually takes about ten days. Once they are germinated, transfer them to a protected area where the temperatures are at 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Transplant the seedlings once they're big enough to handle. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Pour the potting mix into each container. Add gravel or pebbles to drain excess moisture. As necessary, you can add more potting material. Place the containers in a sunny window or in indirect light. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. Once the danger of frost is over, cover the plants with a thick mulch layer. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs regular watering to thrive. Use a rain gauge to check how much water the plants need. Also, use a timer to turn off the irrigation system during dry spells automatically.
  6. You should pick your basil at its peak. You can encourage bushier growth by picking the leaves more often.
  7. The leaves can then be dried on paper towels, screens, or other suitable surfaces. Place the leaves in glass jars, bags or in the refrigerator.
