How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Choose your location carefully. Basil is an annually-living plant. It will not survive beyond one season if the location is not right. It can tolerate partial shade but prefers full sun. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. Place the seeds 1/2 inch deep into small pots containing potting mix. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination takes approximately ten days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once they are large enough to handle, transfer the seedlings. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Add potting mix to each container. Add more potting mixes as necessary. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. To prevent wilting, mist the plants every day.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will keep them warm and prevent water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. A rain gauge can be used to measure how much water plants need. You can also use a timer for the irrigation system to be turned off during dry spells.
  6. When your basil reaches its peak, pick it. Pick leaves frequently to encourage bushier growth.
  7. Use paper towels to dry leaves. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
